Mission, Nonprofit Status & Public Benefit

Advancing Medical Science. Expanding Scientific Knowledge. Serving the Public Good.

Who We Are

Founded on March 22, 1996, the National Society of Medical Scientists (NSMS) is an independent nonprofit scientific organization dedicated to advancing medical science, public scientific education, biomedical research, and evidence-based healthcare innovation for the benefit of society.

NSMS brings together interdisciplinary expertise in medicine, public health, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, medical robotics, digital health, and emerging healthcare technologies to address important scientific and public-health challenges.

Our organizational mission extends beyond professional collaboration. We seek to advance scientific understanding and make appropriate scientific knowledge accessible through research, education, responsible dissemination, and community-oriented public engagement.

NSMS's public-service objectives are intended to benefit students, educators, researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, and the broader community.

1. Our Mission

To advance medical science and public health through independent scientific research, accessible education, responsible dissemination of knowledge, and interdisciplinary collaboration serving the broader community.

NSMS is committed to connecting scientific discovery with public understanding and encouraging research and education that contribute to long-term improvements in human health.

Five Core Mission Priorities

1. Advance Scientific Knowledge

Promote rigorous, evidence-based biomedical investigation and interdisciplinary research directed toward important medical and public-health challenges.

2. Expand Public Scientific Education

Support the dissemination of reliable scientific and medical information to students, educators, researchers, and members of the general public.

3. Promote Accessible Research Dissemination

Encourage responsible sharing of scientific findings, educational publications, research summaries, and publicly accessible learning resources.

4. Foster Responsible Healthcare Innovation

Advance scientific understanding of emerging medical technologies, including artificial intelligence, biomedical sensors, wearable medical devices, digital twins, and robotics, with attention to safety, ethics, scientific validity, and public benefit.

5. Strengthen Public Health and Community Engagement

Promote scientific literacy, student development, community education, and interdisciplinary initiatives addressing important human-health needs.

2. Nonprofit Status and Charitable Purpose

NSMS reports recognition as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its IRS determination letter and governing documents provide the authoritative record of its legal classification and charitable purposes.

NSMS's stated scientific and educational mission emphasizes public scientific education, biomedical research, responsible knowledge dissemination, and community benefit.

The organization seeks to direct its mission-related expertise and resources toward activities that extend beyond its membership and contribute to broader public understanding of medical science.

Scientific Membership in Support of Public Benefit

NSMS brings together scientists, physicians, researchers, engineers, and other scientific professionals to contribute expertise toward research, education, scientific communication, and responsible innovation.

Professional collaboration supports the organization's scientific work; the stated mission of NSMS is not limited to providing exclusive networking, professional, or commercial benefits to its members.

Scientific and Educational Organizational Focus

NSMS states that it does not operate as a hospital, medical practice, healthcare insurance provider, or commercial clinical-care enterprise.

Its institutional focus is scientific research, public education, knowledge dissemination, and responsible development and evaluation of emerging healthcare technologies.

These descriptions of organizational purpose are intended to reflect NSMS's governing documents and actual operations.

3. Public Benefit and Community Impact

NSMS believes that medical science creates meaningful public value when scientific knowledge is responsibly developed, accurately communicated, and made accessible to wider audiences.

Our public-benefit activities and priorities include:

Scientific Education and Public Learning

Supporting educational seminars, scientific presentations, research communication, and accessible learning resources addressing biomedical science and public health.

Student Research Mentorship

Encouraging the scientific development of high school and undergraduate students through research guidance, educational mentorship, and STEM learning opportunities.

Open Scientific Knowledge

Supporting access to educational guides, research summaries, scientific communications, and other appropriate public learning resources.

Community Scientific Outreach

Promoting science education, public-health literacy, and engagement with communities and educational institutions.

Research for Societal Needs

Encouraging biomedical research directed toward disease prevention, scientific understanding, medical safety, and unmet human-health challenges.

Responsible Healthcare Innovation

Promoting scientifically rigorous investigation of emerging healthcare technologies while recognizing the importance of ethics, evidence, accessibility, and human safety.

Reported 2025–2026 Educational Impact

According to the NSMS 2025–2026 Public Impact & Educational Outreach Summary, the organization reports the following annual activity measures:

Public-Benefit Indicator: Reported Activity

  • Free scientific webinars and community workshops: 16 annually

  • Students and community members reached: More than 2,500 annually

  • Free scientific research mentorship: 150+ hours annually

  • Published educational materials and event recordings: Reported as freely accessible

  • Public educational programs: Reported as available without paid membership

These are organizationally reported figures. Supporting records, where available, include event programs, participation records, mentorship documentation, educational materials, and relevant publications.

Detailed program descriptions and the featured June 2025–September 2026 educational curriculum are presented on our Scientific Education, Research & Community Outreach page.

4. Scientific Independence, Ethics, and Accountability

NSMS is committed to responsible scientific research, transparent communication, and appropriate nonprofit governance.

Our institutional principles include:

  • Scientific Integrity: Objective inquiry, evidence-based reasoning, reproducibility, and appropriate independent evaluation.
